NAG Ping - Issue 16 (August 2004)This issue covers:
Worldwide NAG Announces New Leadership Dr. G. Richard Field, Chairman of The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), announced the appointment of a new executive management team for the company following the retirement of two top executives. Dr. Rob Meyer, President of NAG Inc. in the United States, has been named CEO of the NAG group of companies as well as Director of NAG Ltd. Dr. Steve Hague, Deputy Director of NAG Ltd, has been named COO of NAG Ltd and CTO for the NAG group of companies. Finally, Mr. Hiro Chiba has been appointed as Representative Director of Nihon NAG. Dr. Brian Ford, OBE, founder and Director of the company retired effective August 1, 2004 after leading the organization for thirty-four years. Under Dr. Ford's leadership, NAG had become a highly respected world force in technical and scientific computing. Dr. Field also praised the major contributions made to the development of NAG business in Japan by one of the two founding Representative Directors of Nihon NAG, Ms. Haruko Kanjo, who had retired from her position. Dr. Field noted that both Dr. Ford and Ms. Kanjo would continue to be affiliated with NAG companies on an advisory basis. Click here to learn more about these important leadership changes at NAG . Taking a Good Look at .NET for Finance The features of 64-bit systems making higher application performance possible translates into more realistic models for quantitative analysts charged with portfolio modeling or risk analysis or similar applications. Knowledge of the .NET programming environment will be important when the move to 64-bit systems triggers consideration of whether it is time to re-write or re-engineer systems. A paper written by Rob Meyer and David Sayers of NAG was published in the July/August edition of Financial Engineering News, explaining what .NET is and why it has special value to systems development in finance firms. ”Taking a Good Look at .NET for Finance” is available online (pdf), and is one of many articles included in NAG's collection of white papers. A Momentous Meeting of Mathematical Minds On Wednesday, June 16, 2004, a very special occasion in NAG’s distinguished history was held at the University of Oxford Computing Laboratory in honor of Dr. Brian Ford of NAG. To mark Brian’s momentous achievements from the inception of NAG to the present day, some 30 years later, a group of mathematical minds ranging from numerical analysts to senior executives of multi-national organizations gathered to reflect on the last 30 years of NAG and in particular to pay respect to Brian’s contributions to the world of numerical computation. Dr. Ford spoke about the early days of NAG as well as the future and the exciting times that lay ahead in terms of product development and technology advances in the marketplace. Read more about this event highlighting NAG’s purposes, activities, and achievements from the inception of NAG to the present day under Dr. Ford’s direction. There are cases when NAGWare f95 is not used for the link step, and the question arises about what libraries or objects are needed to link. This can be easily done on most systems. Assuming the Fortran bits were not compiled with special flags such as -gc or -mtrace, quickfit.o and libf96.a will be needed in the link step, both of which are located in /usr/lib/NAGWare. Example:
Product News - New Implementations NAG is committed to offering new implementations of its broad range of numerical and statistical software components and compilers and tools. The following implementations for NAG products have recently become available: NAG Fortran Library, Mark 20
NAGWare f95 compiler, Release 5.0

About The NAG Ping The NAG Ping is an occasional newsletter of technical tips, product information and discussions of technical computing topics. Its principal audience is in North America though it has readers throughout the world. It is the sister publication of the NAGNews, produced by our colleagues at NAG Ltd primarily for those in Europe and elsewhere outside North America. The NAG Ping is named in memory of Mike Muuss, formerly of the Army Research Laboratory. Among the creative and useful works of his life was the "ping" program to test network connection. It was written by Mike in 1983 to help diagnose problems on his network. The name is tied to Mike's earlier work in sonar modeling and echolocation. To learn more, click here.
