NAG fl90, Release 4

FNW3204DSL - License Managed

Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP, Salford FTN95

Installer's Note

1. Introduction

This document is essential reading for whoever is responsible for the installation of the NAG fl90 implementation specified in the title. The installer will be supplied with a printed copy of this document. Both this (in.html) and the Users' Note (un.html) are supplied in the doc directory on the distribution medium.

Whenever the NAG fl90 has been supplied in compiled form, that form is considered to be the standard library file. The use of all supplied software must be in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Software Licence signed by NAG and each site. Any request to use NAG software on a computer other than the one licensed must be referred to NAG (see Section 6).

2. Implementation Provided

2.1. Applicability

4. Installation

4.1. Library Installation

You should have Administrator privileges to install this software.

To install the Library insert the CD into your CD drive to display the NAG Library Setup Menu. If the Setup Menu does not display, run e:\setup.exe where e is the drive letter for your CD drive. Select Install the library, Windows Installer will lead you through the installation.

Installation of the Library requires a license key, which will be provided by NAG. This will either be a "Trial" key, which will allow you to try out the library for a limited period of time, or a "Fully Paid" key which enables use of the library indefinitely on a specific workstation. If you do not have a key, Installer will generate a file (usually saved as C:\NagKeyRqst.txt), which may be E-mailed or faxed to NAG (see Appendix). In return NAG will send you a valid license key.

Should you need to re-install the license key, (for example to replace a trial key), locate and run the utility fnw3204dsl\bin\key_inst.exe.

Once in possession of a valid license key, begin the installation process again. You will be prompted for the license key. Once this has been entered the process will continue.

After installation you should ensure that the software described in Section 3.1 is present and accessible.

The installation procedure will place a shortcut which starts a Command Prompt with local environment variables set to access the modules and link with the the NAG library. This shortcut is placed in the Start Menu under Start|Programs|Numerical Algorithms Group|FN04. The local environment variables are:

FTN95CFG	to simplify using the interface blocks
NAGFL90LIB	to simplify linking to the static library
NAGFL90DLL	to simplify linking to the DLL
NAGFNDIR	this is needed by the batch files nagex and nagex_dll
These environment variables will simplify creating executable files (for more details see Section 3.1 of the Users' Note (un.html)).

This software is supported by Microsoft Windows Installer which provides an uninstallation facility via Control Panel|Add/Remove programs.

4.2. PDF Documentation Installation

It is not necessary to install the Library manual. Users may access it directly on the distribution CD, or it may be installed on a different workstation or server.

To install the Library manual insert the CD into your CD drive to display the NAG Library Setup Menu. If the Setup Menu does not display, run e:\setup.exe where e is the drive letter for your CD drive. Select Install the library manual. Alternatively you could run e:\manual.msi. Windows Installer will lead you through the installation.

You may wish to move the PDF documentation files to the same location as that for other NAG products. You are encouraged to make them readily available to users, but in such a way that they are not generally accessible from outside your site.

If you do not already have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader for your platform, a free copy can be downloaded from Please check this site for availability of a reader for your platform.

Please note that if you are using Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or earlier you might experience some problems when printing documents that contain non-standard characters, such as integral signs, square roots and large brackets. These characters will print correctly using Adobe Acrobat 5.0.

The HTML form of the Essential Introduction contains some mathematical characters that are displayed as question marks by releases of Netscape earlier than 6, but these are displayed correctly by Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer. They may also be viewed via the PDF.

If using Netscape, it might be necessary to re-install Acrobat to ensure that the Acrobat plug-in has been installed. If the plug-in has not been installed, Netscape may copy PDF files to a temporary directory, and then not be able to navigate from there.

4.3. Checking Accessibility

The installer should ensure that the advice given to users in Section 3.1 of the Users' Note (un.html) is suitable for the installation. This can be done by running a few example programs following that advice. The installation can also be tested using the batch files nagex.bat and nagex_dll.bat.

4.4. Release to Users

The Users' Note (un.html) should be checked and amended as necessary (particularly Section 3.1). It can then be made available to users directly, or be absorbed into local access information.

The following material should also be made accessible to users:

documentation files:

The FN04\Manual directory contains the online documentation.

compiled libraries:

modules information files:
example program material:
pdf and HTML documentation files

Note that the example material has been adapted, if necessary, from that printed in the NAG fl90 Manual, so that programs are suitable for execution with this implementation with no further changes. Making the example material directly available to users provides them with easily adaptable templates for their own problems.

4.5. Maintenance Level

The maintenance level of the library can be determined by writing a simple program to call procedure nag_lib_ident, which prints out details of the implementation, including title and product code, compiler and precision used, release and maintenance level.

5. Documentation

Each supported NAG fl90 Library site is ordinarily provided with a printed copy of the NAG fl90 Library Introductory Guide. Additional documentation is available for purchase; please refer to the NAG websites or contact your local NAG Response Centre for current prices (see Section 6).

Online documentation is bundled with this implementation. Please see Section 4.2.
