March 2013 – The Numerical Algorithms Group, experts in numerical libraries and HPC services, are delighted to announce a new scholarship programme with the University of Hong Kong. The NAG Scholarship in Statistics will be awarded twice in the academic year 2012/2013. The first will be awarded to an MPhil or PhD candidate studying in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science for the best thesis where NAG software is used. The second will be awarded to two final year Master of Statistics candidates who have declared either the Risk Management theme or Statistical Informatics theme, and based on their examination results in the theme.
Students and Staff at the University of Hong Kong utilize the NAG Libraries and Compiler in their work to help make light work of complex computation, however the partnership has older collaborative roots. In 1988 the routine “Multivariate Time Series and Diagnostic Checking of Residuals” was added to Mark 13 of the NAG Library (and still features in the Library today). The routine was developed based on the 1981 Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B paper of Professor W K Li, Head of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Hong Kong.
Talking about the new partnership John Holden, NAG VP Sales and Global Lead Financial Services said “We are really excited about the NAG Scholarship in Statistics at the University of Hong Kong. We already work with many graduates from the dept who have since moved on to work in commercial organizations or other Universities around the world. We now get to meet and work with them earlier in their career and look forward to more collaboration as a result of this partnership”.
