BSP's design is based on the bulk-synchronous parallel architectural model, which parameterises system characteristics in order to predict and realise good performance without tying application code to a specific architecture.

The BSP library consists of a small number of subroutines to implement process creation, remote data access and bulk synchronisation.

The BSP library embodies a static SPMD programming model.
